If you're looking for an immersive, action-packed movie that will transport you to the world only dreamed of in your wildest fantasies, then Star Trek Beyond is just the sci-fi adventure for you. Beyond follows the crew of the USS Enterprise as they explore new worlds and rescue stranded aliens with their brand new ship, this time with a shorter name. Led by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), they arrive on one such planet only to find themselves under attack from an alien army so powerful it would be suicidal to fight back. The crew is separated with Spock (Zachary Quinto) stranded alone on the planet, Captain Kirk captured by the leader of the alien army, Krall (Idris Elba), and the rest of the crew grounded on their ship. The rest of the film is your typical Trekkie magic where our heroes work together with their wits to defeat impossible odds with a little help from some friends. But unlike most sci-fi movies focused so heavily on visual effects spectacle and action, Star Trek Beyond puts character first. Beyond practically oozes nostalgia from every scene as we venture back to a time where heroes were heroes and characters were well-rounded rather than just one-dimensional caricatures. The supporting characters all get their time to shine, including Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), who quickly became the best new characters in the series. The film also has an incredibly timely message about unity, collaboration, and forgiveness that is surprisingly deep for a summer blockbuster. Special effects are second to none in this movie, with world-building on a level of Star Wars while still remaining true to the franchise's original style. The general aesthetic feels like something out of video game more than it does real life, but this lends itself well to the action-packed space battles and vibrant alien worlds. Overall, Star Trek Beyond is everything you would want to see in the 13th installment of this legendary science-fiction series. Action, family, friendship, and forgiveness—all in one epic science fiction spectacle that transports us into a world that seems more like something we watched than something we watched. The film itself is gorgeously sleek with an impressive attention to detail to bring you into the world of the Enterprise crew. This film has some killer special effects including some out-of-this-world action scenes in outer space which are among the best I've ever seen. As far as action movies go this one does not disappoint with many spectacular fight scenes and chase sequences throughout. The plot itself does not take center stage in this movie (not that it should) but I felt like it did get the exposition out within the first act to move onto the meat of the story. That said, once you get past that point I did feel like there were quite a few holes in the story. The amount of coincidences stacked against each other (and convenience piled on top of convenience) got to be too much at times for me personally. I do think that it's clear that Justin Lin did his homework when he came into this film, however I do think that when you have so many characters to begin with, splitting them off into their own storylines definitely hurt this one in regards to its overall plot. cfa1e77820
